My work is an investigation of location and is based on a constant conversation with my urban surroundings. It is the delicate observation of nature within that context and the multiplicity of images in this richly layered world that lend an ambiguity to the landscape and expose it to individual interpretation.
My intention is to find the way a particular physical environment shapes the emotional experience and imagination, spawning an abstraction that conveys both an intellectual and sensual way of experiencing the landscape. Of paramount importance to me is to convey the heartfelt connection I feel to my home and to create work that canvasses that ubiquitous nexus between geographical and emotional landscapes.
The mark making uses a visual idiom of botanical drawings and has an especially lyrical quality which informs not only the real, but also imagined and remembered landscape.
In feeling as well as merely seeing my immediate environment notions of place, identity and culture are explored. Whilst connected to the traditions of landscape painting I’m interested not in a literal depiction but rather conveying a sense of a place that situates it implicitly.
