The etymological root of Illustration is the latin “illustrationem” meaning “a vivid, enlightening representation”, and a stem of “illuminare” or “to throw into light”. Illustration as such, is a mode of knowledge transmission through the visual, casting light onto the visual void where awareness of something exists, but it’s form, size, shape, texture, colour, those key identifiers, are absent until they are revealed by the maker’s hand. This principle is the crux of Peter Cornett’s illustration practice, translating the atmosphere and delicate rendering of gothic book illustration to a contemporary fine art landscape where the image is a means to achieve discourse rather than the end in and of itself.
