Mariam Abbas is a Jordanian born Iraqi-Australian Contemporary artist residing in Sydney Australia.
Mariam's work explores the boundaries of what might be regarded as painting in an effort to define what painting can do right now. She is constantly searching for fresh approaches to painting and new means of self-expression.
She is fascinated by things she cannot see but can only feel. Since she finds colour to be distracting, she avoids using it. Her attention is on the elements and experiences that lie beneath the surface of colour. interacting with the substance, structure, and production Internally.
Materials are thought to have more than simply a practical purpose; they also inspire Mariam to create novel forms and novel sensory and emotional encounters. Her research focuses on how materials serve an emotional purpose and how our interactions change as we create a piece of work.
In 2019 Mariam Won First Prize for sculpture and other 3D work at Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre for her work Vulnerability.
