Benjamin Akuila is an Australian multidisciplinary artist working and residing in Dharug/Riverstone. Benjamin’s work explores the relationship between culture, context and time, and how these three factors shape a person's identity construction and performance. Benjamin’s ceramic vessels take the form of household objects, and explore the home as a unit of socialisation and identity construction. Using clay, oxides, and organic/inorganic textiles alongside close reference to traditional Tongan art forms and practices, Benjamin creates a visual language that is personal to their cultural identity as a mixed race Tongan growing up in Western Sydney.
