Belinda Skyring is a multi-disciplinary artist working in Sydney. Her work explores repetition of line and shape, positive/negative space and colour. Skyring uses a combination of painterly techniques including spray painting and hand painting to a large scale unstretched canvas placed on the floor. The evidence of many successive layers, leaves a visible residue of the painting process at the edge of each canvas. Rhythmic pattern invites the viewer to become lost in the ebb and flow of movement, representative of domestic objects or activities and large bodies of water. Skyring seeks to explore an elusive abstract space at the junction of process and meaning. In addition to painting on canvas the artist experiments with disgarded found objects which act as both stencils and forms in their own right. In the tradition of Duchamp, the object is transformed to create a new narrative questioning art in everyday existence.
