Anu Kakwani is a mixed media artist with a painterly disposition. Propelled by her hybrid or ‘coconut’ status as a second generation Indian-Australian practising life and art on unceded Gadigal land, her work interrogates multiple and often contradictory experiences of memory, time and place. Drawing on the rich history of the photograph and cinema in South Asian public culture Anu collages her own archival imagery to build vivid floating installations as a Mise-en-scène of her life. The enlarged and fragmented scenery is layered and transparent. It is loosely tied back together to recreate a recognisable whole with new spaces in-between. Spaces in-between for alternative stories and new imaginings.
